@beansOfJelly NO, the only thing I spray is the dirt in the breeding tray. The pinheads will actually get trapped and drown in the little water droplets. If you see any condenstaion or moisture on the inside of the tub you should wipe it out immediatley. I normally vent my tubs to help with the condensation.

@beansOfJelly I have never used a thermometer so Im only guessing but I would estimate the temp to be around 75-85 degrees in there with a bit of humidity from the moisture in the breeding tray.

@greendayhieu I dont know what wattage my heating blanket is. Its one that you would typically use on your bed. I just have it folded up and underneath the tubs. I keep it in low in the summer and during the winter I have it on high. I would think that any heat source is ok since there have been people that have hatched crickets using the heat from their tv cable box. The main thing to look for is to get one that doesnt auto shut off after a few hours. They are hard to find nowadays

@ny51luw The soil should remain damp for the whole incubation process. The soil only needs to be damp, You do not need alot of water to accomplish this. The heat source only accelerates the hatching process. I have always kept my crickets on heat. I have a couple times hatched crickets without heat just to see if its possible and it is, however it does take longer for them to hatch.

I put another nest tray in the breeding tank right away. I try to keep one in there at all times. In the end it really depends on how many crickets you need/want to care for. If your only feeding a few off a day, you might find that a new tray each time produces too many crickets. You might start waiting a week before you put a new tray in. Starting out I would keep a tray in there at all times. This way you have ample eggs to hatch and can find what cycle works best for you.

I just started breeding my own crickets. I found your videos the most informative and very well done. I have a question for you, when you take out the nesting soil and put it in the incubator, do you immediately put a new nesting tray in the breeding tank or do you wait? I know it takes a week or so for the hatchlings to hatch. My gals have been laying eggs in the nesting container now for almost 5 days. I'm ready to move it tomorrow, but wasn't sure if I should replace it with another.

I would stay away from leaving dirt on the bottom of the tank and go with making breeding trays like in this video. Its alot easier to just transfer the eggs to a breeding tank. The eggs can hatch anywhere from 1 week to 3 depending on how you incubate them. Keep the soil moist but not moist to the point you have small puddles. I would remove the adults and put them in another tank, they can eat the babies.

it can be tough at first just because theres alot you learn through trial and error. After a while its really easy. They basically breed themselves, you just have to host a nice place for them to live and breed.

@Phanatical92 It took about 2 1/2 weeks total. 1 week of the tray in the main colony letting the females lay eggs in it and 1 week to 1 1/2 weeks in the breeding tub before the first pinheads started to appear. With heat it was taking about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks total to get my first pinheads.

@beansOfJelly Yes, Peat will work, however it does dry out faster and will require you to spray it more often than just dirt. Make sure you spray it around 3 times a day to keep it moist.

@ny51luw I do not know the specific temperature of the container. I would guess thats is around 80degrees F. If you do not have a heating pad to use you can always put the breeding tray up on top of say your cable box, or anything that you keep power to most of the day that produces heat.

Well I suppose you can kill off the babies you do not want, or you can remove the breeding tray sooner to get less of a hatch out of it. You do not have to hatch the eggs if you do not want them as well.

Not sure what that is. I googled it and came up with Coconut husk substrate. If thats what your talking about then YES it will be ok to use that. Just make sure you keep it moist, you might need to spray it twice a day.

The moss will not kill the crickets. You can gently remove it with a Q-tip or just let it go. I use a heating blanket as my heat source. IVe heard of people using their Cable boxes,TV sets ect. I just use the heating blanket because I can control the heat. Eggs should hatch without the incubation, It might take a little bit longer for them to do so. Keeping the tank clean will help with the gnats. remove the old lettuce and food and replace it often.

Yeah ok. Is moss bad for the crickets, and also I'll need a new heat source because my original heat source was my computer (it overheats alot so i used it to incubate) and since my computer broke can you recommend some others? Also, will the eggs be ok without a lil incubation? 1 more question. How do you avoid gnats going into your cricket container?

its ok, stop watering since the soil is moist enough, you can take a Q-tip and gently remove the moss or just leave it. Sometimes when I am incubating it gets a little mossy since I use alot of heat and moisture. It will be ok. If your really worried about it remove the tray and icubate it, and put a new tray in there. The heat from incubation should help dry out the tray. make sense?

sounds like its going well. Let them keep at it for a week or so. Make sure you keep the soil moist while they are laying. I use a small spray bottle. My guys that hatched are growing fast. Ill post a video on them soon here.
